English requirements · checked October 2026
Yes, you can. Fifteen of Ahasa’s partner universities in Europe accept Sri Lankan students for bachelor’s and master’s degrees without an IELTS or TOEFL score, and several more do so for one level only. Most accept a medium-of-instruction (MOI) letter showing your previous studies were in English; others use their own free online English test or an admissions interview. We checked every rule below on the university’s own website in October 2026.
01 — How it works
A signed letter from your school or university confirming that your studies were taught in English. Accepted by universities in Latvia, Lithuania and Hungary, among others.
A short online test or video interview run by the university, usually free. Used by Kaunas University of Technology, Škoda Auto University and several Hungarian universities.
Swedish universities accept G.C.E. Advanced Level studies taught in English as proof of English, under Sweden’s national admission rules.
Cheaper and taken online from home. Accepted in Belgium, Germany, Austria and Lithuania. Scores needed are listed below.

Universities where an IELTS-type certificate is still needed for Sri Lankan students include the University of Latvia, UE Amsterdam, UCAM (Spain) and the University of Malta (which also offers its own ISET test). Rules change every year and can differ by programme, so we confirm the exact requirement for your course before you apply. Our guide to studying in Europe from Sri Lanka covers the rest of the route, from what you need to start to where the visa is filed. For tuition and the money you must show for the visa, see the cost of studying in Europe from Sri Lanka.
03 — The MOI letter
Ask your school principal (for bachelor’s applications) or your university registrar (for master’s applications) for a signed letter on official letterhead stating that your studies were taught and assessed in English, with the years of study. Bring it to your consultation and we will check that it matches what the university asks for.
Your English will still be checked: universities without IELTS usually hold an interview, and the embassy may ask questions in English at the visa stage. We prepare you for both.
04 — Questions
Yes. Fifteen Ahasa partner universities in Latvia, Lithuania, Sweden, Hungary and the Czech Republic accept Sri Lankan students for bachelor’s and master’s degrees without IELTS, using an MOI letter, A/L English, their own online test or an interview.
For many universities in Latvia, Lithuania and Hungary, yes, usually together with an interview or a short online test. Some universities, such as Škoda Auto University, do not accept MOI letters and use their own test instead.
Yes. Under Sweden’s national admission rules, G.C.E. Advanced Level studies in English meet the English requirement for Linnaeus University and University West.
At some universities. Howest (110), VIVES (105), Constructor University (110), Modul University Vienna (125, bachelor’s) and Lithuanian Sports University (90) accept Duolingo. Several others do not.
The universities on this list decide on English themselves. The embassy may still ask questions in English at the visa interview, so we prepare every student for it.
