Why Sri Lankan students choose Sweden

Sweden is the largest of the Nordic countries and one of Europe’s most established destinations for international students. Its universities have taught in English for decades, and Swedish engineering, automation and environmental research carry weight well beyond Europe.
For students with families, Sweden is unusual: dependents can join you and work full time while you study. That is a materially different proposition from the Baltics, where dependents generally join only after graduation.
Term-time work is capped lower than in the Baltics, which reflects how Swedish programmes are structured — the academic load is heavy and full-time study is treated as exactly that. Graduates get twelve months to find work.

What Sweden asks you for
Requirements vary by institution and by programme. These are the documents every file needs.
- Completed secondary education, or equivalent, for bachelor’s entry

05 — Costs
What a year in Sweden actually costs
Sweden is not the cheapest destination in Europe, and it does not pretend to be.
Tuition varies widely by field, and each university sets its own fees. Living costs depend on the city, on whether you take university accommodation or a private flat, and on how much you cook. The residence permit carries its own financial requirement, set by the migration authority and reviewed periodically.

Tuition for your specific programme, realistic monthly costs for the city you will actually live in, the current requirement for the permit, and the scholarships you may be eligible for. 06 — Living
Living in Sweden
Sweden is long and thinly populated. Most international students are in Stockholm, Gothenburg or one of the university towns, where student housing is organised through the universities and the housing queue is something to start early — we will tell you when.
Outside the cities, Sweden is forest, lake and coast, and the right to roam means most of it is legally open to you. Winters in the north are long and dark; the summers, in exchange, barely end.
English is spoken almost universally, which makes daily life straightforward from day one. Swedish is worth learning if you intend to stay and work, and most universities offer free courses in it.

What students ask us
Can I study in Sweden in English?
Yes. Both institutions we represent teach full degree programmes in English. Swedish is not required for your degree, though free language courses are widely available and useful if you intend to work there afterwards.
Where is the Swedish student visa processed for Sri Lankans?
Swedish residence permits for study are handled by the Swedish Migration Agency, with biometrics submitted through VFS. We manage the filing and tell you at the outset which appointment you will need.
Can I work while studying in Sweden?
Yes. Undergraduates may work up to 15 hours a week during term, and postgraduates up to 15 hours. Hours are counted across the academic year, and we will explain how that works for your programme.
Can I stay in Sweden after I graduate?
Yes. Graduates can apply for a permit of up to twelve months to remain in Sweden and look for work or start a business.
Why are the work hours lower than in the Baltics?
Sweden does not set a fixed weekly cap in the same way, but Swedish programmes assume full-time study and the practical room for part-time work is smaller. Plan on study income covering less of your costs here than it would in Latvia or Poland.
Can my spouse or family join me?
Yes, and this is one of Sweden’s real advantages. Dependents can accompany you for the duration of your studies and are granted full work rights while they are there.
Are Swedish degrees recognised internationally?
Yes. Sweden is part of the Bologna Process and uses the ECTS credit system, so qualifications are recognised across the European Higher Education Area and transfer readily for further study or professional registration.
Can I travel elsewhere in Europe on my permit?
Yes. Sweden is a full member of the Schengen area, so your residence permit allows short-stay travel across the zone without a separate visa.
