Why Sri Lankan students choose Lithuania
The Baltic country we know second best — and the one with the deepest technology sector.
Lithuania is the largest of the three Baltic states, a member of the European Union, the eurozone and the Schengen area. Its universities have taught in English for decades, and Vilnius University — founded in 1579 — is one of the oldest in Northern Europe.
Vilnius has become one of the densest startup and fintech centres in Europe relative to its size, which matters if you are studying computing, business or engineering and want to work while you study. Postgraduate students may work full time, and graduates get a twelve-month permit to find work.
One practical difference from Latvia: the Lithuanian national visa for Sri Lankan applicants is not processed in Colombo. We handle that route for you, and we will tell you exactly what it involves before you commit.

What Lithuania asks you for
Requirements vary by institution and by programme. These are the documents every file needs.
- Completed secondary education, or equivalent, for bachelor’s entry

05 — Costs
What a year in Lithuania actually costs
Lithuania sits alongside Latvia and Poland at the affordable end of the European Union.
Tuition varies widely by field, and each university sets its own fees. Living costs depend on the city, on whether you take university accommodation or a private flat, and on how much you cook. The residence permit carries its own financial requirement, set by the migration authority and reviewed periodically.

06 — Living
Studying in Vilnius and Kaunas
Most international students are in Vilnius or Kaunas. Vilnius is the capital, with a UNESCO-listed old town of baroque courtyards and a modern business district across the river; Kaunas is the second city and the country’s technology and engineering hub, with a large student population of its own.
Both cities are small enough to cross on foot or by a single bus, and student accommodation is close to campus rather than an hour away. Lithuania is heavily forested, with the Curonian Spit and the Baltic coast a couple of hours from either city.
Winters are cold and dark, summers long and bright. English is widely spoken among younger Lithuanians and throughout the university system, and there is an established South Asian student community in both cities.

What students ask us
Can I study in Lithuania in English?
Yes. All six institutions we represent teach full degree programmes in English, across business, engineering, computing, humanities and sport science. You do not need Lithuanian to complete your degree.
Where is the Lithuanian student visa processed for Sri Lankans?
Through VFS Singapore rather than Colombo. It is an extra step compared with Latvia or the Netherlands, and it is one of the first things we walk you through — including timing, so it does not collide with your intake date.
Can I work while studying in Lithuania?
Yes. Undergraduates may work up to 20 hours a week during term. Postgraduates may work up to 40 hours — full time — which is among the most generous student allowances in the European Union.
Can I stay in Lithuania after I graduate?
Yes. Graduates can apply for a twelve-month permit to remain in Lithuania and look for work related to their qualification.
Can my spouse or family join me?
Postgraduate students can bring dependents, and those dependents receive full work rights. That is a meaningful advantage over Latvia, where dependents join only after studies conclude.
How does Lithuania compare with Latvia?
They are close on cost and identical on student work hours. Lithuania has more partner universities on our list and better dependent rights; Latvia has the simpler visa route, filed in Colombo. We will put the two side by side for your specific programme.
Are Lithuanian degrees recognised internationally?
Yes. Lithuania is part of the Bologna Process and uses the ECTS credit system, so qualifications are recognised across the European Higher Education Area and transfer readily for further study or professional registration.
Is Vilnius a good city for technology students?
It is one of the strongest in the region. Lithuania has built a large fintech licensing sector and a dense startup community, and several of our partner universities run programmes tied directly to it.
How much will it cost me in total?

Is Lithuania a safe place to study?
Yes. Lithuania is an EU member state with low violent crime, and both Vilnius and Kaunas are compact cities where students routinely walk and use public transport at night.
