01 — Overview

Why Sri Lankan students choose Spain

Thirty hours of work a week and full family rights — an unusual combination in Southern Europe.

Spain combines things that rarely appear together: thirty hours of permitted work a week, dependents who can join you with full work rights, a twelve-month job-search permit, and a visa filed in Colombo rather than New Delhi.

The country has invested heavily in renewable energy infrastructure and has a growing biotechnology sector, alongside the established technology hubs in Madrid, Barcelona and Valencia.

The institution we represent, UCAM, is in Murcia in the south-east — a real Spanish city rather than an international bubble, with costs well below Madrid or Barcelona and a strong record in sport science and health.

    05 — Costs

What a year in Spain actually costs

Spain is mid-range for Western Europe, and Murcia is well below the Spanish average.

Tuition varies widely by field, and each university sets its own fees. Living costs depend on the city, on whether you take university accommodation or a private flat, and on how much you cook. The residence permit carries its own financial requirement, set by the migration authority and reviewed periodically.

We prepare a written cost estimate for every student we work with. Tuition for your specific programme, realistic monthly costs for the city you will actually live in, the current requirement for the permit, and the scholarships you may be eligible for. Built around your circumstances rather than a generic table — and there is no charge for it.

    06 — Living

    Living in Spain

    Spain

Murcia is a mid-sized city in Spain’s south-east, an hour from the Mediterranean coast, with a large student population and costs well below Madrid, Barcelona or Valencia. It is a Spanish city rather than an international one, which is harder at first and better later.

The climate is among the warmest and driest in Europe. Winters are mild, summers are long and hot, and outdoor life continues year-round in a way it simply does not in the Baltics.

Spanish is worth learning here, more than in the Nordic countries — daily life outside the university runs in Spanish, and it will widen both your part-time work options and your experience of the place. The university teaches in English and offers Spanish alongside.

    08 — Questions

    What students ask us

Can I study in Spain in English?
Yes. The institution we represent offers degree programmes taught in English. Spanish is not required for your degree, though it will make daily life and part-time work considerably easier.
Where is the Spanish student visa processed for Sri Lankans?
At BLS in Colombo. Spain is one of the destinations that does not require a New Delhi appointment.
Can I work while studying in Spain?
Yes. Undergraduates may work up to 30 hours a week during term, and postgraduates up to 30 hours. Hours are counted across the academic year, and we will explain how that works for your programme.
Can I stay in Spain after I graduate?
Yes. Graduates can apply for a twelve-month permit to remain in Spain and look for work or start a business.
Do I need Spanish to live there?
Not for your degree, but yes for daily life outside the campus, more so than in Northern Europe. Murcia is not an international bubble. Most students find that a few months of effort transforms the experience, and the university runs courses alongside your programme.
Can my spouse or family join me?
Yes. Dependents can join you during your studies and are granted full work rights.
    Are Spanish degrees recognised internationally?
Yes. Spain is part of the Bologna Process and uses the ECTS credit system, so qualifications are recognised across the European Higher Education Area and transfer readily for further study or professional registration.
Can I travel elsewhere in Europe on my permit?
Yes. Spain is a full member of the Schengen area, so your residence permit allows short-stay travel across the zone without a separate visa.
How much will it cost me in total?
That depends on the programme, the university and the city, and a generic figure would mislead you. We prepare a written estimate for each student — tuition, living costs, permit requirements and any scholarships you qualify for — at no charge. Request yours here.
