01 — Overview

Why Sri Lankan students choose Germany

The largest economy in Europe, and the one that most reliably hires the engineers it trains.

Germany is the industrial centre of Europe — automotive, advanced manufacturing, chemicals, machine tools — and its universities are wired directly into that economy. For engineering and applied science graduates, the route from degree to employment is shorter and better-worn here than almost anywhere else.

The student visa is issued by the German Embassy in Colombo rather than through a visa agency, which means the process is more formal and the documentation is checked more closely. That is precisely the part we handle.

Germany also requires a blocked account — a fixed sum deposited before you travel, released to you monthly once you arrive. It is a real hurdle, and it is one of the first things we plan with you rather than one of the last.

  1. 01Europe’s largest economy, with graduate demand concentrated in engineering and manufacturing.
  2. 02A job-search permit after graduation to find work in your field.
  3. 03Dependents with full work rights while you study.
  4. 04Twenty hours of permitted work a week during term.
  5. 05Visa issued at the German Embassy in Colombo — no third-country appointment.
  6. 06EU-recognised qualifications under the Bologna framework and the ECTS credit system.
  7. 07Schengen mobility across twenty-nine countries on your residence permit.
  8. 08Rail and city infrastructure that makes living without a car straightforward.

04 — Entry

What Germany asks you for

Requirements vary by institution and by programme. These are the documents every file needs.

  • Completed secondary education, or equivalent, for bachelor’s entry
  • A recognised bachelor’s degree for master’s entry
  • Academic transcripts, translated and attested
  • Evidence of English proficiency
  • Valid passport with sufficient remaining validity
  • Statement of purpose or motivation letter
  • Financial documentation for the residence permit
  • Health insurance valid in Germany
Send us your transcripts We will tell you what is missing and which programmes you qualify for.
05 — Costs

What a year in Germany actually costs

Germany requires a blocked account before you travel, which is the largest single item to plan for.

Tuition varies widely by field, and each university sets its own fees. Living costs depend on the city, on whether you take university accommodation or a private flat, and on how much you cook. The residence permit carries its own financial requirement, set by the migration authority and reviewed periodically.

We prepare a written cost estimate for every student we work with. Tuition for your specific programme, realistic monthly costs for the city you will actually live in, the current requirement for the permit, and the scholarships you may be eligible for. Built around your circumstances rather than a generic table — and there is no charge for it.

06 — Living

Living in Germany

Germany

Germany is a country of many mid-sized cities rather than one dominant capital, and student life differs sharply between them. Munich and Frankfurt are expensive; Bremen, Leipzig and much of the east are markedly less so, with the same quality of teaching.

Public transport is comprehensive and student tickets are heavily subsidised. Most students live without a car and cross the country by train.

English is widely spoken in the universities and in the larger cities, and both institutions we represent teach in English. German is worth learning if you intend to stay and work — it widens the job market considerably — and universities offer courses alongside your degree.

08 — Questions

What students ask us

Can I study in Germany in English?
Yes. Both institutions we represent teach in English. German is not required for your degree, though it will widen your options substantially if you intend to work in Germany afterwards.
Where is the German student visa processed for Sri Lankans?
At the German Embassy in Colombo, rather than through a visa agency. The documentation is examined more closely than in some other routes, which is why we prepare the file rather than hand you a checklist.
Can I work while studying in Germany?
Yes. Undergraduates may work up to 20 hours a week during term, and postgraduates up to 20 hours. Hours are counted across the academic year, and we will explain how that works for your programme.
Can I stay in Germany after I graduate?
Yes. Graduates can apply for a residence permit to look for work related to their qualification, and can move to a work permit once employed.
What is a blocked account and how much is it?
It is a German bank account holding a fixed sum that you cannot withdraw all at once — a set amount is released to you each month after you arrive, to prove you can support yourself. The figure is set by the German authorities and revised periodically. We confirm the current amount for your intake and build it into your plan from the start rather than raising it at the end.
Can my spouse or family join me?
Yes. Dependents can join you while you study and are granted full work rights.
Are German degrees recognised internationally?
Yes. Germany is part of the Bologna Process and uses the ECTS credit system, so qualifications are recognised across the European Higher Education Area and transfer readily for further study or professional registration.
Can I travel elsewhere in Europe on my permit?
Yes. Germany is a full member of the Schengen area, so your residence permit allows short-stay travel across the zone without a separate visa.
How much will it cost me in total?
That depends on the programme, the university and the city, and a generic figure would mislead you. We prepare a written estimate for each student — tuition, living costs, permit requirements and any scholarships you qualify for — at no charge. Request yours here.
